Hele-On Service Changes Due to Weight Restrictions on Kolekole Bridge Effective October 3, 2021

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is reducing the allowable weight rating for Kolekole Bridge on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) to 12 tons effective September 21, 2021. HDOT has provided a waiver to Hele-On to cross the bridge with certain bus types. As a result, Hele-On bus service has been modified to restore routes along the Hamakua Coast via Routes 1, 60 and 80.

Below are the following service changes until further notice.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  Please plan for longer trip times to get between East, North and West Hawai'i County during this time period.

You can learn more about the detour and issue at HDOT's website.

Discontinued Routes:  60: Hilo to Honomu, 77: Hakalau to Waimea, 2-80: Hilo to S. Kohala Resorts via Via Daniel K. Inouye Hwy & 2-1: Hilo/Blue Line to Waikoloa Village/Kailua-Kona via Via Daniel K. Inouye Hwy

Re-established Routes: 1: Hilo to Kailua-Kona, 2/Blue Line: Hilo to Kailua-Kona via Via Daniel K. Inouye Hwy, 60: Hilo to Waimea, 80: Hilo to South Kohala Resorts via Hamakua Coast
